Let’s Make Roselle Tea – the Blood Cleansing Tea

Rosella plant (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is an herb that has been used as a tradition medicine for many centuries in many countries as it has several health benefits.

Its sun dried fleshy flowers (sepal or calyx) are used to make Roselle tea or juice. Roselle plant products is now locally in Kenya and is available as tea in many supermarkets. You can also find tinned Roselle juices on the shelves of some super markets.

Hibiscus sabdariffa is rich in antioxidants and bioflavonoids that help in assimilation of vitamin C. Roselle tea is good for cleansing the blood so it is particularly useful during a detox program.

Over a long time Roselle tea has been used to manage the following conditions:

  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disorders
  • Coughs
  • Fever
  • Dyspepsia
  • Pain
  • Wounds
  • Diabetes (unsweetened tea)

Recipe for making Roselle tea

Ingredients

  1.  Hibiscus flowers
  2. Water
  3. Sugar or honey
  4. Slices of lemon

The Process

  • Measure 1 teaspoon of flowers to 1 cup of water, so if you want to have 1 liter you measure 4 cups of water and 4 teaspoons of the herb.
  •  Add the herb into the water and bring it to boil
  • Simmer for about 10 minutes
  • Let it cool and sweeten with honey or sugar
  • Add a or two of fresh lemon

Roselle tea can be drunk hot or cold. It is very pleasant chilled with a slice of lemon. It is a cooling drink during hot season.
